چکیده

Ocimum plants are of great interest to traditional medicine in the history several civilizations, particularly terms chronic human diseases. Essential oils obtained from this genus have also been used as therapeutic agents. In present work, two species Djibouti, basilicum L. and americanum L., were subjected hydrodistillation obtain their essential oils. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed determine chemical composition both Linalool (41.2%) estragole (30.1%) major compounds among 37 that identified oil (EOOB), carvotanacetol (38.4%) (27.5%) main 42 (EOOA). Morever, cytotoxic activity EOs evaluated against 13 cancer cell lines (K562, A549, HCT116, PC3, U87-MG, MIA-Paca2, HEK293, NCI-N87, RT4, U2OS, A2780, MRC -5 JIMT-T1) using a luminescence spectrophotometric method; hence, showed significant activities. The antibacterial activities assayed on five Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus epidermidis Corynebacterium sp.) seven Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Shigella sonnei, Salmonella enterica sv. Typhimurium Enterobacter cloacae) by agar disc diffusion methods. Both exhibited moderate thus each has an Pseudomonas aeruginosa for EOOB cloacae EOOA, while others negative. findings work promising anticancer effects total with potential use natural alternatives synthetic drugs; however, there only effect agalactiae.

Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of Ocimum canum Sims. and Ocimum selloi Benth.

This work describes the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the volatile oils of Ocimum canum and Ocimum selloi, both occurring in Jequié/BA, northeastern Brazil. The plants were collected in the winter/2005 and summer/2006, the oils extracted by steam distillation and further analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 30 and 31 compounds was identified from the oils of O. selloi and O. canum...
